Message from the President

Dear LMU Community:

I am saddened to tell you that Ted Fisher, S.J., passed away Tuesday, July 15, in Los Gatos, Calif.  He was 91 and had taught theology at Loyola Marymount University for more than three decades.

A scholar and distinguished teacher, he was a professor in the Department of Theological Studies from 1962-87.  He is well remembered for his rigorous class on the Gospel of St. John, but Father Fisher also taught “Introduction to Catholic Theology” to generations of students.  He was named emeritus in 1988, and continued teaching at LMU part-time, as well as for many years in the Adult Education Program at St. John Fisher Parish, Rancho Palos Verdes, and in the novitiate of the Carmelite Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Los Angeles in Alhambra.

Father Fisher was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Sept. 3, 1922.  He entered the Society of Jesus at Sacred Heart Novitiate in Los Gatos in 1940, was ordained in 1953 in San Francisco, and pronounced his final vows in Los Angeles in 1957.

Prior to teaching at LMU, he was a professor of theology at Santa Clara University from 1955-57 and again from 1960-62.  In the interim, he completed his graduate theological studies with a biennium at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He earned his B.A.  from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash., in 1946 and his M.A. in philosophy in 1947.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Fisher of Simi Valley, Calif.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 24, at 10 a.m. in St. Clare Chapel, Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, in Santa Clara, Calif., with a committal following at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.

We are grateful for the life of Father Fisher and his many years of service to the university and wider community.  May he rest in peace.
