Message from the President
Feb. 20, 2015
Dear LMU Community:
It is with great sadness that I tell you of the passing of Liam E. McGee ’84, a Loyola Law School alumnus who served on the LMU Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2010. Liam passed away on February 13 at the age of 60 following a two-year battle with cancer.
A native of County Donegal, Ireland, Liam grew up in Southern California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of San Diego in 1976, an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University in 1979, and a J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1984.
Liam formerly served on the Trustees’ Law School Committee and the Loyola Law School Board of Overseers. In 2000, he was the recipient of Loyola Law School’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Liam’s brother, Thomas M. McGee ’89, is a current member of the LMU Board of Regents.
Liam most recently served as executive chairman of The Hartford, a position from which he stepped down on January 5, 2015, and previously held the roles of chairman, president and chief executive officer. Before joining The Hartford, Liam spent more than three decades as a financial services business leader, also serving as president of the Consumer and Small Business Bank for Bank of America Corporation.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Liam E. McGee Memorial Fund supporting the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital, 80 Seymour Street, Hartford, CT 06102 (online gift form) or Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, 70 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Feb. 24 at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Huntington Beach, CA. A private burial will follow.
Please keep Liam, his wife Lori, their children Lauren, Stephen, Jordan and Aidan, and their entire family, in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
David W. Burcham
President
