Carmen Ramirez

Message from the President
June 8, 2023

Dear LMU Community:

I am saddened to share that Carmen Ramirez ’98, retired executive director of advancement at LMU Loyola Law School, passed away on June 5, 2023, after a brief illness. She was 63 years old.

Over her more than 40-year career at the law school, Ms. Ramirez’s service spanned the leadership of seven deans. She joined the law school as an administrative clerk for the Registrar and was soon promoted to associate director of Admission. She later became director of Alumni Relations and retired as executive director of Advancement on Oct. 1, 2020.

Ms. Ramirez was a pillar of the LMU Loyola Law School community. As she often stated, she experienced the complete life cycle of alumni, from applicants to students to alumni. Ms. Ramirez leveraged those relationships to gain support for myriad flagship events and programs, including the annual Alumni Grand Reunion, the “50 at Albany” campus celebration weekend, swearing-in and commencement ceremonies, the installation of Dean Michael Waterstone, and several more.

A champion for social justice, Ms. Ramirez ignited a brighter world through the many alumni volunteer opportunities she created during her tenure. She helped organize Attorneys for Others events; she orchestrated Adoption Day, an annual event where alumni help underserved members of the community complete their adoption paperwork; she helped establish the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Public Service Award, which is bestowed during an annual fundraiser benefiting the law school’s African American Scholarship Fund; and her fundraising efforts helped found programs like Young Lawyers, the Summer Institute, and our clinics.

Plans to celebrate Ms. Ramirez’s career and life are pending and will be shared soon.

Please keep Carmen, her spouse, Raul, their daughters Evette and Desiree, and son, Raul Jr., and her former colleagues and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.
President
