Maria Cano
As the associate vice provost for Financial Planning and Budgets at LMU, Maria Cano leads a team of professionals in budget and financial planning. With over 35 years of business management experience in higher education, Associate Vice Provost Cano brings a wealth of insight into critical issues facing American colleges and universities. Her approach to leadership is marked by a commitment to finding innovative solutions that optimize resources while fostering and promoting effective collaboration between academics and business operations. A key to her success is her close work with those impacted by changes in policies, involving them in the development of new business practices.
Associate Vice Provost Cano played a pivotal role in the multi-year implementation of the financial and human resource management system, Workday. This university-wide project, led by her, streamlined and integrated institutional processes, significantly enhancing efficiency and productivity. Her team's efforts have also been instrumental in providing opportunities for better utilization of financial resources, empowering the colleges and schools to be more self-supportive and maximize their resources.
A proud double LMU alumna, Associate Vice Provost Cano has demonstrated her commitment to the LMU community in numerous capacities. From serving on the Implicit Bias Task Force to being a mentor in the First To Go program, her involvement spans a wide range of areas. Her recognition as an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit Honor Society, in 2022 is a testament to her exceptional contributions. Coming from a family of LMU alumni, she brings a unique perspective to her role, always striving to see the financial process through a student lens.
